What does teeth whitening do?

Peroxide-based whitening changes the color of natural teeth. A cleaning can remove some surface staining, while bleaching acts on colored compounds within the tooth. The cause of discoloration affects the result.

At Tomlinson Dental, we check the teeth and gums and discuss your sensitivity history before recommending whitening. A single dark tooth, pain, or a recent injury needs assessment first.

In-office or take-home whitening?

Treatment in the office

Whitening is applied during a supervised appointment with protection for the surrounding tissues. Ask which method is available and what change is realistic for your starting shade.

Dentist-supervised treatment at home

Your dentist provides instructions for the product and, where appropriate, fitted trays. The amount of gel and wearing schedule depend on the system; more gel or longer use is not a shortcut.

Check the cause

We assess discoloration, decay, gum health, and visible fillings or crowns. This helps establish whether whitening is appropriate.

Agree on expectations

Discuss the likely change, sensitivity, treatment schedule, and any mismatch with restorations. A particular shade cannot be guaranteed.

Follow the product instructions and tell us about discomfort. We can review the result and discuss whether further treatment is appropriate.

What affects whitening costs?

The method, trays or materials supplied, and number of treatment sessions affect the fee. Follow-up and replacement gel may be separate.

Ask what the proposed package includes and what future touch-ups would cost. Check any benefits directly with your insurer rather than assuming cosmetic whitening is covered.

Payment and dental benefits

We accept cash and cards. Third-party financing is available, subject to approval.

Although we are not contracted with any dental insurance company, we gladly help submit claims so your provider can reimburse you directly. Payment is due in full at the time of service; we do not provide insurance estimates.

How do store-bought products compare?

Some over-the-counter whitening products are effective when used as directed. The ADA Seal of Acceptance identifies products that meet its safety and effectiveness requirements; it does not promise a particular shade for everyone.

Professional care adds an assessment of your teeth and a chance to discuss the method, fit, and sensitivity. Store-bought products do not diagnose the cause of staining. Both approaches can cause temporary sensitivity or gum irritation.

What whitening will not change

Existing dental work

Crowns, veneers, and tooth-colored fillings retain their existing shade. Whitening natural teeth around them can make a mismatch more noticeable.

Tooth shape or an underlying problem

Whitening does not repair a chip, close a gap, or treat decay. Some discoloration responds poorly and may require another approach after diagnosis.

Before replacing visible restorations for color alone, discuss the benefits, preparation, and cost with us.

Teeth whitening questions

Sensitivity is a common side effect. Stop and contact us if treatment is painful or symptoms persist; the schedule or approach may need review. Follow the product instructions rather than increasing exposure.

Whitening is not permanent. Diet, tobacco, and the original discoloration affect how the shade changes over time. Ask when, or whether, a touch-up is appropriate.

Many primarily remove surface stains with polishing ingredients. They do not necessarily produce the same change as peroxide bleaching. Check the product’s intended use.
